Leadership team

Our leadership team drives the strategy and vision for Flux to consistently deliver great results for our people, our clients and shareholders. Meet the faces behind Flux.

Umesh Parag
Acting Chief Executive Officer

Umesh was a Silver Medalled CommonWealth Games hockey star before he started his successful career in finance (he’s also competed in two Olympics too). With over 20 years experience and a BCA from Victoria University, Umesh worked in the audit and corporate finance teams at KPMG in Wellington before joining the Meridian Group in 2007. In 2012 he moved to Powershop, and joined Flux Federation as CFO, followed by COO. Flux has never been the same. Umesh brings a level-headedness, deep thought process, and financial strategy to an industry that is ever-changing. On any given day you'll find him managing stakeholder and board relationships, mitigating risk, and keeping an eagle eye on Flux's overall financial performance. Umesh has recently been appointed Flux Federation's Acting Chief Executive.

Mark Soper
Chief Customer Officer

Mark Soper brings his business development, strategy and corporate structuring expertise within the energy, telco, government and technology sectors to Flux. His feet might be on his desk, but they're also firmly on the ground when it comes to making the right decisions to help grow our customers' businesses. After years as GM at Powershop and helping them win multiple awards across the world, Soper's philosophy is all about building elite teams that win. His competitive streak and belief that execution and action beat ideas every single time, makes him a Flux force to be reckoned with.

Philippa Dawe
Chief Product Officer

First things first, we call her Phil. This indomitable woman has over 20 years of design, brand, and marketing experience in New Zealand, Australia, America, and the UK. Armed with a ruthless focus on the customer, a keen eye for detail, and exceptionally high standards, Phil brings Flux's business strategy to life by making sure that our products deliver nothing less than the best experiences for the people who use them. Formerly Flux's Head of Design, Phil is living proof that Flux is dedicated to being a design-led company. She's also dedicated to diversity: Phil has single-handedly increased the number of Flux's female designers, UXers, and writers by 50% since she started with us.

Emma Barnes
Crew Experience Officer

From grafting tomatoes to software testing, Emma has a diverse skill set and breadth of experience, including 12 years in the tech industry across a number of roles at Fonterra, Trade Me, Powershop, and now Flux. Here at Flux, Emma is in charge of Flux Crew, which means she makes Flux a place that cares about people and quality. She defines the people strategy at Flux, making sure we hire the best people for the job, and giving them the support they need when they need it. Emma is committed to creating a strategy that believes in transparency, autonomy and diversity. Her team of Crew Champions helps Flux crew work to their full potential – which of course leads to an excellent product for our clients and their customers. With a degree in English Literature, Emma brings a poet's eye to her work at Flux, making her an empathetic leader, excellent communicator, and thoughtful team member.

Jess Venning-Bryan
VP Client Success

Jess has spent two decades advising organisations like Lion, the Electoral Commission, Saatchi & Saatchi Global, and the Sustainable Business Council on how to engage customers with projects and brands. From beer and electricity to voting systems and employment, she's delivered projects in New Zealand, Australia, the USA and UK. But wait, there's more. Jess was the Chief Revenue Officer at Flick Electric Co. for 5 years, and is the Founder and Managing Trustee of Cultivate Mentoring Lab, a not-for-profit that partners women with experienced mentors to help them grow their confidence and progress equally at work. Not one to rest on her laurels, Jessica has also served on the Board of PledgeMe, the National Council of Women, and is a mentor with start-up accelerator Creative HQ. Impressed? So are we – which is why we nabbed her.

Jess is known for bringing a customer centric mindset to the team along with years of energy experience, and marketing prowess. She's helped some of NZ's most significant organisations develop game changing ideas, brought them to life, and shared their stories, and will do the same for our clients. A self-described "klutz", she may spill a coffee or two on you during a meeting, but you'll be so dazzled by her brilliance, you won't even care.

Dan Lee
VP Business Development

Dan is Flux's resident engineer and technology entrepreneur with over 25 years' experience in technology and leadership roles primarily in energy market systems throughout Australasia, Asia, and Europe. After founding two successful SaaS startups (and selling them off respectively to Powershop and NASDAQ listed Citrix), Dan spent 2 valuable years in Silicon Valley. We managed to lure him back to the dark side with a promise of spearheading the rollout of Powershop in the UK, and building a handpicked high performing Flux product team – and sausage rolls. Equipped with tech savvy, business strategy, and boundless enthusiasm, Dan never settles for the status quo, and is dedicated to demonstrating excellence in all that he does – especially when it comes to overseeing the formation of Flux's business partnerships and leading the planning and execution of strategies to increase sales and company growth.

Jim Barrett
Principal Product Manager

Jim, or Dr Barrett to you, came to Flux with a PhD in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Bath. He's put this depth of knowledge to use in international energy markets over the last 20 years, focussing on operational management of customer-facing functions and processing teams at both Contact Energy and Powershop. Currently our Principal Product Manager, Jim has held such positions as Head of Product, Director of Client Services, UK Regional Manager, and Head of Operations. He's one of the key people who helped roll out the Powershop platform in New Zealand and Australia before we shipped him back to his homeland (the UK) to roll out of the platform in that market – to great success. His diverse skill set, knowledge of the product, and classic dad jokes make him an integral part of our team.
